A Modern Farmhouse

In the outskirts surrounding Camden, the suburb of Oakdale is home to rural properties with country charm, combining the quintessential features of the Macarthur region.

We were tasked with renovating an existing cottage to create a contemporary family home, with the end goal of being a short stay rental property. The overall design intent was to use the existing cottage farmhouse charm and bring a modern, liveable atmosphere to the interior space. The final design sees a combination of these styles through the use of reclaimed materials, a timeless, warm and strong primary palette, and a secondary palette of playful undertones, helping to give the home its point of difference. From the custom-designed door, through to the contemporary kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, mudroom and study, all dispersed amongst the singular level home, a colour thread is weaved through creating a sense of consistency as you walk through the space. The final design has produced a modern country home, with a cool contemporary edge.

When arriving at the home, you are greeted with a custom-designed timber barn style door painted in a striking Dulux Tamas, a colour which becomes a key theme throughout the home. Upon entering, a constellation of striking pendant cage lights delicately hangs above the living room. The raked ceiling which the collection of pendants hang from becomes the first contemporary feature of the home you are met with.

The kitchen island bench is created from formed concrete, becoming the centrepiece of the open plan kitchen, dining and family room. The custom-built cabinetry also uses the same Dulux Tamas as the front door, in a low sheen. The combination of pendant lighting, formed concrete, timber, marble and farmhouse sink bring together features from the existing cottage and contemporary design. The custom-designed fireplace becomes the feature piece of the family room while also referencing the same tonal features found throughout the house.

Similar colours and tones are continued throughout the house, shown through the custom cabinetry of the mudroom, office and walk-in robes, all featured in Dulux Tamas. The bathrooms carry through the timber tones of the home displayed through a timber-look wall tile.

We have been able to bring contemporary charm to a classic farmhouse in Macarthur. By paying close attention to the detail and a considered approach of the design, the team were able to bring the qualities found in the surrounding local Macarthur landscape, into the interior, and combine this with contemporary features throughout the home.
